Almost everyone that comes in for a facial doesn’t use a toner but comments on the difference they feel when they start.  Here’s eight very important reasons you should be using one.

It restores your skin's pH balance.

Our skin is naturally acidic, typically with a pH balance of between five and six (on a scale from 0 to 14). But that balance can get out of whack after cleansing due to the alkaline nature of soap. When this happens, your skin needs to work overtime to return to its normal levels (and that may result in oil), but using a toner can help restore this balance quickly.  The can leave your skin is less prone to oiliness and infection, creating a more vibrant and smoother appearance.

It shrinks pores.

Applying a small amount of toner to a soft cotton ball or pad and gently blotting and wiping your face with it will remove oil giving the appearance of smaller pores.  Large facial pores allow more dirt, oil and toxins to enter the skin and cause irritation and infections. Facial toners tighten your facial pores, allowing fewer oils and toxins to settle into the skin. This creates a fresher, cleaner and less oily appearance while preventing acne.

It adds a layer of protection.

Toners can help close pores and tighten cell gaps after cleansing, thus reducing the penetration of impurities and environmental contaminants into the skin. It can even protect and remove chlorine and minerals present in tap water.  Many toxins that affect the health and appearance of your skin come from industrial-made chemicals. Facial toners work to remove environmental toxins such as smoke, smog and other chemical residues from your skin. This helps your skin to look brighter and healthier, and long-term benefits may include less acne, less severe acne scarring and fewer wrinkles.

It moisturizes.

Some toners are humectants, which means they help to bind moisture to the skin.  They also provide hydration to your skin, which is essential to maintaining elasticity, smoothness, moisture and a more youthful appearance. Proper skin hydration reduces the signs of aging skin and provides an effective base for the application of facial cosmetics. Many facial toners also provide vitamins and other essential skin nutrients to keep your skin healthy and balanced.

It refreshes skin.

Toner can also be used in lieu of washing your skin when it's oily or dirty. It will leave your skin revitalized even when you're on the go.  They can also be used for cleaning in and around your ears and for reducing oily deposits on your back, chest and arms, where acne also tends to form.

It can prevent ingrown hairs.

Do you wax?  Shave?  Toners containing glycolic or other alpha hydroxy acids can help to prevent ingrown hairs, so it also aids in grooming.

Acne Reduction

Acne can be painful and unsightly and can lead to facial scarring. It can also cause your skin to appear more oily, dull and unbalanced. By removing oily buildup, residue and dead skin cells, facial toners assist in reducing the number of facial blemishes and acne you may already have and work to prevent future breakouts.
